This is the very large headstone for Stroud on the far top of the hill at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Salida, Colorado. It was easily 8 feet tall and made of White Bronze (Zinkie, zinc).
Very well hidden in the trees, it was quite the treat to see this at the top. It was a small bit of a hike to get to it.
Catharine Jane Stroud was born in 1862 and died in 1894, She was 32 years old. Wesley Frederick Stroud was born in 1859 and died in 1890, He was 31.
“Not lost, but gone before”
”No pain, no grief, no anxious fear, can reach the peaceful slumber here.”

One panel on the east side of the monument is missing completely.
Salida Mail published on August 12th, 1890 wrote that Mr. W.F. Stroud was the bookkeeper and chief clerk for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. He was only married for a short 3 months before his passing. The disease was brain trouble brought on by over working as it is stated in the article. His newly married wife stayed with him during his illness along with her father J.C. Pennington.

In May of 1891 she had the monument erected at her husband’s grave by an Omaha firm.
She would pass away on August 23rd, 1894 at her parents home in Gunnison, from paralysis of the stomach. Her remains were shipped to Salida to be interred with her husband’s remains on the hill.
