Yellowstone Creek, Huerfano County, Colorado

Yellowstone Creek in Huerfano county was briefly established as a postal route. Not much is left aside from a community of ranchers. There was a post office and church there around 1915, though for many years before that, it was used as a trading trail.

I am not sure when the church fell, but I would have loved to see this in former glory.

This trail is not far off the Taos trail near Badito and Fairista and meets at a crossroads with it. These trails connected life among tribes, families and settlers long before the English pioneers would come into play and begin homesteading. This would have been a trading route long before the name Colorado was even mentioned or thought of. This area had more ranchers than anything else and played a major part in the history of Huerfano County and the Gardner area.

This little community also had 2 cemeteries. The Sanches Cemetery pictured here. Both are on private property but this one can be viewed from the road.

Karen Mitchell (rest in peace) has some information on her website about the grave here. Her website Kmitch .com has done invaluable amounts of information. She has done extensive work to preserve the history of Huerfano County before her passing.

Possibly 7 graves are located in this cemetery.

In honor of Karen Mitchell’s legacy, please refer to her information on this area! Also, the website was down last month, and I am wondering if help is needed to keep this website and information alive!

The wind was fierce during filming, a little shaky. It kept trying to knock my Ipad from my hands!!!
