In the quiet of San Isabel View Cemetery in Colorado, a mysterious grave speaks of a traveler or pioneer. Buried in winter’s grip, this unmarked resting place invites speculation about its history and identity.

Leggett, San Isabel View Cemetery

This grave in San Isabel View Cemetery in Hillside Colorado really has no information available aside from stating that the grave was dug in the winter. The frozen ground was impossible to dig and the grave was shallow. They finished the burial by building the grave up with rocks and dirt.

Raised burial, not very common in this area, in cemeteries. Notice the tree growing above the bottom stone.
Stacked stones at the head of the grave.
Side view.

This is the first burial to be identified in this cemetery. There is no date or other names attached. Only a cross was made later to mark his name clearly.

“Leggett, First one buried in cemetery”

I do have to wonder if he was a traveler or was looking to stay in the valley. Perhaps he worked for another family that setteled in the valley. The other oldest marker in the cemetery is marked in 1875.

I searched and could find nothing more, besides that this person was laid to rest in a beautiful place. Nothing says that this is a Male or Female either.

Rest in Peace Leggett. You are not forgotten.

*Disclaimer, I’m not a historian, scholar or writer. Ask my high school teachers, they’ll confirm that. I do my best to find information and I’m always open to edits and corrections when needed. I would never post anything incorrect unintentionally. I only mean to honor the lives that were with the stones and information that I can find. I have a love for cemeteries and ghost towns. Cemeteries are full of stories, sometimes I can find them, sometimes I can’t! Be respectful if visiting any of the places I share. These places won’t be around forever, especially if not treated with the utmost in respect. Want to see more? Visit our blog at listed in our Bio!
