TINCUP

What started as Virginia City in 1880, turned into one of the most violent gold towns in Colorado. The name Virginia City conflicted with other names of towns and was reincorporated as Tincup in 1882.

Jim Taylor found gold in Willow Creek in 1859 and carried it back to camp in a tincup. Rumor had it that he carried his gold in a tincup on his waist after that. Tincup Gulch was born.

The first person buried in the Tincup was T.L. Stormes. He was buried on the Protestant Knoll.

Tincup was said to be lawless, and that most of the burials were good sheriff’s that crossed the bad outlaws. Any Marshall that came into town and went against the lawless outlaws were told to cooperate or meet their fate at the cemetery.

The cemetery is fascinating and a must see for Colorado. These photos are from my archive in 2011. I can’t wait to get back out there, it’s been a few years.
