Graneros Gorge
Named for the type of rocks in the gorge, Graneros Shale.

In 1967 an anthropologist named William Buckles investigated a partial skeleton found in the area. Believed to be the resting place of Chief Cuerno Verde, and it’s widely speculated that the remains were his. Cuerno Verde translates in to Green Horn, the name of the mountain to the west of the gorge. Chief Cuerno Verde was killed in 1779 near what is now Rye Colorado.

This place was a super popular picnic ground in the 60s. The ruins are those of the picnic ground built by Civilian Conservation Corps of Colorado in the 1960s. The pavilion at one time was a glamorous spot to eat lunch and view the hidden sights, that many don’t know are just a short distance from the interstate.
Though it’s it in ruins, it is a beautiful sight to see.
Near colorado city, the gorge is deep and at the bottom flows the Graneros Creek.
